The end of September marked Camp Comfort's 3-year birthday! So, nearly 750 posts later, I thought it was about time we update the blog a little....

Fall, The Beginning

Starting to build my Fall wish list...

Colored Denim (JBrand, $176) and Alexander Wang (Eugene, $795). I am keen to try some colored denim for Fall... Might start with a "safe" color like this cobalt blue. And it's been years and years since I invested in an "It Bag" as I generally stick to totes and older leather bags, but I can't get this bag off my mind... Good way to spend a piece of the annual bonus? Questionable...

Pullover Sweaters (Madewell, $98) and Waxed Cotton (Lands End Canvas, $180). Just bought this sweater from Madewell... It's too warm to wear it now but I think it will be a Fall staple. Slightly cropped, boxy fit. And I love a good waxed cotton jacket. This one has a very traditional feel with the plaid lining.

Suede Ankle Boots (Madewell, $131) and Chukka Boots (Eastland, $89). Last year I purchased the Rachel Comey Mars boot in tan and I LOVE them, but this year I am thinking I might need a black version as well. I like these suede ankle boots - they are sort of a cross between Rachel Comey and Isabel Marant. And I've nearly worn my Chloe Sevigny x Opening Ceremony x Bass ranger boots to death, these Eastland chukkas could help carry the load this year.

hi everyone! this is Alyson from Unruly Things. I'm excited to fill in here with a few of my summer essentials while Roberta is off enjoying some blissful time with her sweet, sweet baby boy. I also just had a baby boy back in May, so my summer has revolved around being cute and comfortable, yet accommodating to baby.

racerback tanks - my summer wardrobe has pretty much been breezy tanks and cutoff denim shorts. I love the bright colors of these tanks from Madewell.

a colorful baby wrap - I'm typically drawn to solid colors and most often black. however, since my boy was born, I've been feeling like being more vibrant! I love the look of these wraps from EllaRoo.

stud earrings - since I've been doing a lot of baby wearing, necklaces have been out of the question. I like to dress up my summer outfits with sparkly studs.

a catch all bag - I recently purchased a giant vintage woven bag and I'm obsessed. I can fit just about anything I'll need for a summer outing – for me and for baby!

1. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Siren
I decided to try orange lipstick finally and while I've picked up a few pricier orange lipsticks that I love (MAC's Morange and Lipstick Queen's Chinatown Glossy Pencil in Genre), my ultimate favourite is this very inexpensive lipstick from the drugstore. It's the perfect shade of orange, and while it doesn't have the staying power of other lipsticks, it goes on really nicely.

2. Dace Juniper top
This blouse is so perfect. Loose fit, gauzy cotton fabric, cute colour & details (I love the peach stripe down the front and buttons in back). Really easy, which is what I like best in summer when I basically wear glorified pyjamas for three months straight. I prefer it to a t-shirt because it offers a little more structure than jersey.

3. Filippa K Dina Cork Wedge in tan
These were my "fancy shoes" purchase for the summer. They're described as "tan" but they're a little closer to pink. They're lightweight and comfortable and I feel really great when I wear them.

Hello Campers!

Jamie, from A Desert Fete, here. As Roberta's will soon be (YAY!) my summer has been baby, baby, baby. I can't talk about this summer's essentials without acknowledging how the baby has changed what is essential! Hopefully you might like these even if your summer isn't so one minded.

First off; a fine parasol or umbrella is so handy. We love walking around the neighborhood with baby in one of his carriers. He likes to look out at the world around him, but hates the sun in his eyes (and on his precious new skin.) So mama and baby keep shaded in style!

I have been living in slouchy tank tops. Let's face it, a brand new mom generally has no need for a figure hugging top. But we still want to look cute, stay cool, and be comfy, natch.

And forget wearing a bulky ole nursing bra under one of these breezy tanks, pick up a 3 pack of American Apparel's bandeau type bras. They offer pretty comfortable support, easy access for nursing, and they can be fully visible under a way oversized tank without it really looking like a bra, you know?

Ever since my studio mate Anne gave me a preview of her new fragrance Love, I've been so in love with it, I've worn it every day. With top notes of yuzu citrus, basil, and magnolia, I'm obsessed!

A sundress: Whit Urchin Dress
Brooklyn is hot in the summer time so my daily attire is generally as follows: sandals, large scale necklace, and a sundress.

Leather sandals: Greek Sandals
I bought these leather sandals at the Monastiraki market in Athens on a recent trip to Greece. The color is a natural untanned leather that deepens into a golden tan over time. The best part is that they are not terribly expensive. Here they are at Shell Beach on Shelter Island.

Hi there! I am very very happy to report that our little guy, Wylie, arrived 17 whole days ago on July 15th. He's absolutely perfect and we are enjoying every single second of getting to know him.

I have lots in store for Camp Comfort, but I am going to spend a little more time baby-mooning with the husband and boy. In the meantime, I have asked a few of my favorite bloggers to share with you their Summer Essentials - the few style related items they cannot live without this summer. So, to get things started - Here are my Top 3 Summer Essentials:

Clog Sandals: This summer I purchased the Low Braided Clog from Swedish Hasbeens. I am loving the low heel for everyday wear (photo by moi).

At 8 1/2 months pregnant, I have to say the novelty of dressing around a baby bump is starting to fade. I am very much looking forward to wearing non-preggers clothes! And since they are currently off my daily wear list - I have become obsessed with two trends: High-heel clogs and Wide-leg denim.

Ooo! I just discovered Fiel sandals while browsing the footwear selection at Mohawk General Store...

Incredibly cute Ariana Bohling/Rachel Comey-esque sandals. And at a fraction of the price, I might add.... I mean c'mon ladies, I am a huge fan of all Comey footwear but $345 for sandals?!? That's how much my Mars boot cost! Where do we draw the line?

Slouchy, printed trousers - an intriguing yet difficult to pull off Spring trend. This look caught my eye last year as well, but I never found the right pair to try.

Although not my typical style, I am very interested in trying a pair (not to mention these pants often come with an elastic waistband, tailor made for wearing below the bump). I think the thing holding me back is the thought of looking like Hammer or The Dude...

I ordered myself a "diaper bag" from Baggu x Shabd on Earth Day and it arrived last night! Of course I have noooo idea if it would actually work as a diaper bag, but I used that excuse to justify the purchase of yet another tote bag. I wondered if I needed to wait for the baby to actually carry it (y'know, since it's a "diaper bag" and all), but I couldn't help myself and took it to work today!

Anyways, the Baggu x Shabd Duck Bag is awesome! And totally way more substantial in real life than it looked on the site. It's got short and long handles, an inside pocket and snaps closed at the top.... I highly recommend! And just because it's Friday, I figured I would subject you to a couple photos of my own taking :)

I stumbled across the Brixton Spring Lookbook today and it put me in a nostalgic mood for California.

Before moving to Portland, OR I had never lived more than 10 miles from the California coast and I find that this time of year I become a bit homesick for the beautiful ocean towns I have lived in.

Right now the perfect day would be sitting on a blanket at the beach with a good book, a tiny baby (properly shielded from the sun), watching the husband surf in the distance.... And since I'm daydreaming already, why not include an outfit for said day on the California coast.

We had the most beautiful day in Portland on Saturday - 70 and sunny (finally)! I excitedly busted out my sunglasses for the first time in ages! After FINALLY getting my bangs to grow out long enough to rock the 70's style middle-part, I've resolved to chop them again! I know I am not the only person to constantly go through this vicious cycle... So what is it that makes us want to torture ourselves with this back and forth hair routine? Boredom?

I am taking this photo from the Mulberry Spring 11 runway as inspiration to the salon. Blunt bangs and long wavy hair will be my Spring/Summer look... Plus blunt bags are soooo fantastic with a top knot (my go-to Summer do).

p.s. Speaking of hair, has anyone used the Bumble and Bumble Bb. Texture Hair (Un)Dressing Cream??? Rumored to result in the perfect tousled look... Does it work?

Changing Shapes

Maybe you've noticed that I've been blogging more about shoes and accessories than clothing as of late. Well, it's mostly due to the fact that my body has been rapidly changing shape - Yup, I'm pregnant! And here's the photographic proof :)

To catch you up to speed... I am 24 weeks pregnant, expecting a boy in July. Needless to say the husband and I are overwhelmingly excited and happy.

And as you may expect, I have been facing the unique challenge of dressing around the bump. Luckily I have happily embraced my new curves and have been enjoying showing them off with lots of bump-hugging outfits. I plan to share a few maternity fashion tips here and there, but no worries for the non-preggers readers, this will not become a baby blog (there are a few very lovely ladies currently covering that front).

I know I owe you a larger post on my favorite beauty products, but in the meantime, I wanted to share my new lip color obsession. I give you the Clinique Chubby Stick... odd name, awesome product.

Sheer lipstick-like color that's as moisturizing as chapstick. I started with the Mega Melon, which is the perfect coral color to transition into Spring. I highly recommend!

Countdown to Sun

It's the end of February and I miss the sun! Luckily the husband and I decided to spend a week in March in the California dessert... In less than three weeks I will be bound for Palm Springs to soak in some sun and dry dessert air. Aaahhhh...

Naturally, I've already started packing in my head. And since my "Summer Clothes" have not seen the light of day in close to 6 months, they need a bit of freshening up. An update if you will. But I want to keep it minimal... stripe bikini, sun hat, little shorts and cute sandals.

Did anyone else catch the JCrew-inspired Messy Side Ponytail tutorial over at A Cup of Jo?

Well, I tried it this morning and it actually worked! I think this is the first time I have ever tried a hair tutorial and my hair actually turned out like it was supposed to! Shocking! :) My only extra tip is to try it with dirty hair, helps the messy locks stay in place better.

Recently I started following a beauty blog (my first ever!)

I have never been a huge user of beauty products or makeup. My own regime is quite simple: face lotion with SPF, mascara and lip gloss for day. Gentle face wash and rose eye cream for night. I have done quite a bit of testing over the years to finally land on a grouping of lovely, natural beauty products that do not contain parabens or sulfates and are not tested on animals.

And that's one of the things I have been enjoying about Into The Gloss.... It's not all about "pile as much makeup on as possible", but has a more personal approach to beauty. Interviewing some real women (and yes, sometimes models) to get the scoop on their beauty regimes.

The Lady and The Sailor

While on our road trip I picked up the perfect scoop neck, flowing, striped tee at one of my favorite San Francisco boutiques, Behind the Post Office.

Said perfect tee is made by new-to-me brand The Lady and The Sailor. While the prices are a bit steep for a basic tee ($60+), the fit and quality of fabric makes up for the price. I am smartly adhering to the hand wash instructions to ensure this $60 tee lasts me a while. And if it wears well, I am going to order more (it's that good)!

And since Camp Comfort felt due for a little Instant Outfit action, here's how I'm wearing my new tee:

The husband, pup and I started our 2-week California road trip last Saturday. We're slowly making our way around California visiting family and friends for the holidays. Unfortunately the Portland rain appears to be following us! But I love California when it's dark and rainy, since it's often such a rarity!

As you've probably noticed before, Jennifer is a very talented designer with an equally lovely blog to boot! And this interview is just in time for the gift giving season as any Odette piece would make any girl wildly happy! Enjoy...

Roberta Jane: Tell us a little about yourself.

Jennifer: I'm a former art student who fell into jewelry making five years ago. I grew up in the suburbs of northern Virginia but I currently live in Brooklyn where I share a studio space in Greenpoint with two other designers, Jenny Gordy of the clothing line, Wiksten, and Shannon South of the recycled handbag line, Remade USA. I love our little studio community, it's a very inspiring and productive place to work.

Roberta Jane: When and Why did you start your line Odette?

Jennifer: Years ago, I finished my degree in painting and moved to New York City. I thought I would do something in the art world but I soon found it to be the wrong fit. I started making jewelry as a hobby, probably to fill some creative need I missed from not painting. I was just assembling parts then but as soon as I learned about the lost wax process for making jewelry, I totally fell head over heels. The process is like making tiny sculptures and every little detail comes across in the metal. It feels like an extension of myself as an artist and allows me to merge art and craft with commerce so that I can make a business out of it. I started my line in 2006 and currently have over 75 styles in the line. My newest collection, The Fells, is inspired by glacier hikes, fjords and Scandinavian mountain ranges.

Roberta Jane: What are the 3 biggest inspirations for your designs?

Jennifer:
~ Nature. Just perfect and awe-inspiring. A glacier hike on a recent trip to New Zealand was an inspiration for some of the natural forms in The Fells.
~ Historical references. I love old things with a sense of history. Most things that are made these days are so bland and mass-produced, I love objects that are a little quirky or that have a story to them.
~ Art. It's where I started out so I think it always takes a part in my design process.

Roberta Jane: As a blogger yourself, what are your current top 5 favorite blogs?

Jennifer: I really do enjoy blogs, a few on heavy rotation right now: wikstenmade and reMade (my studio mates blogs), lena corwin, jeana sohn, nicomade.

Roberta Jane: Random Bonus Question: Lipstick or Lipgloss? What is your favorite brand?

Jennifer: I’m definitely more into a matte lip over a glossy one these days. Or maybe just chapstick. I love Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, I rotate between Dragon Girl and Red Square depending on my mood. That and Fresh Sugar Rose Lip Treatment.

While I am in no mood to think about Spring, I was excited to catch a peek at the JCrew Spring 2011 showing.... Lots of pretty colors and textures with spot-on styling (what's new?).

I had spotted this cute pullover sweater on Cafe Mode the other day and quickly saved the image as inspiration. Then happened across the sweater again while browsing Zara's website. Does anyone else find it super annoying that while Zara finally launched a website, it is not actually e-commerce in the US? (Or am I missing the magic Add To Cart button???)

Anyhow, I am hoping to make pullover sweaters a key player in my A/W wardrobe... warmth and comfort mixed with a little tomboy charm.

Our third installment of Camp Comfort's Designer Bio features the lovely Anna Allen. Her understated yet beautiful designs have quickly gained a little cult following. So, we set out to find out what inspires Anna and her namesake line.

Roberta Jane: Tell us a little about yourself.
Anna: Hello, my name is Anna and I am a clothing designer and historian. I have been sewing for as long as I can remember and later became obsessed with the 19th century, particularly the 1850s-'60s time period. I have been studying clothing from the mid-19th century for about 13 years now. I started my business in November 2003 after graduating high school with the idea that I would only be creating historically accurate reproductions for living historians and reenactors. But a few years ago I decided to branch out and learn how to create my own patterns and garments for everyday wear. It has been a challenge, but very rewarding! I'm now able to meet both of my passions; history and clothing for today. When I'm not busy behind the sewing machine or in front of my computer (wink) I enjoy going to the park with my boyfriend, learning to cook new things, watch old movies, knit or participate in living history (though these days that is very seldom).

Roberta Jane: When and Why did you start your namesake line, Anna Allen?
Anna: I started designing and selling my own clothing line in May of this year. I have always been passionate about clothing in general, though my particular style has evolved quite a lot through the years. But as I have gotten older I am beginning to find my "look" and I wanted to have the chance to design the kind of clothing I would like in my own wardrobe. So essentially it's as if I'm designing a wardrobe for myself (though I rarely actually get to own any of my pieces!) And it's great fun coming up with new ideas and figuring out how to transform my ideas into actual patterns!

Roberta Jane: What are the 3 biggest inspirations for your collections?
Anna: History is a big one. When I decided to become a better seamstress, it was because I was so interested in historical clothing. And whenever I design a new garment, I'm almost always inspired by some particular garment from the past; whether it's men's working wear, little girl's frocks or simple dresses from the depression era. Although it's hard for me to choose just three, I'd say nature is another big one. I'm inspired by all the natural colors and forms. There's so much out there, you just have to open your eyes and see the beauty everywhere surrounding us. And lastly, I'm very much inspired by fabric! I have a client I sew historical garments for and every time she asks me to make her a dress, she hands me her fabric and says, "let the fabric speak to you." And I do. :) You'd be surprised how much fabric has to say!

Roberta Jane: As a blogger yourself, what are your Top 5 favorite blogs?
Anna: Oh boy, this is a hard one. I read way too many blogs. I have been thinking maybe I should limit my number and concentrate on a few that constantly make me happy and inspired. Although my list is always changing, here are my current top 5: un arc-en-ciel dans le lavabo, Mettes Potteri, 3191 Miles Apart, NIBS, The Pioneer Woman.

Roberta Jane: Random Bonus Question: What is your favorite season?
Anna: Summer! I know everyone and their mother likes fall, but I am a summertime girl. I love all seasons, don't get me wrong! But there is just something about the summer that I have always loved. Sundresses, bathing suits, lazy books, late evenings, outside concerts, gardening, green grass...bliss.

Ladylike Combo

Stumbled across this ladylike jacket and bag combo at Anthropologie.

I really like both items, but not sure that either are quite my style…. I love the ¾ jacket sleeves and faux fur collar – but not sure if faux fur is my thing. The color of the bag is amazing and I like the Chanel-style chain strap – but again, chain strap = not usually my thing.

Makes me wonder – How true to you stay to your prescribed personal style? Do you stick with certain styles, colors, looks or do you find yourself branching out regularly?

I've been very pleased with the recent refocus on heritage brands and traditional American sportswear dressing. However, so much of this current trend has been geared towards Men. I often have a hard time finding some of these styles for Women.

I've mentioned here before that I am often inspired by menswear and one of my favorite menswear blogs is The Pursuit Aesthetic. They have a great feature called The Aesthete (which mostly features Men) - So, I have taken it upon myself to create looks for Women inspired by these outfits (or kits as they call them).

I've received a lot of questions regarding the Rachel Comey boots - so I thought I'd do a quick follow-up post.

Here's a snap of my Rachel Comey Mars boot... Which are (sadly) going back for two reasons: 1. They are grey, I thought they were black, 2. They are too big.

I'll expand: I shopped around for these boots for several weeks before deciding to go with practical black. I purchased them online at La Garconne because they had my size and free shipping. However, I failed to notice that while they looked black in the photo, they were actually grey - pretty light grey in real life. I was so excited to purchase them that I guess I forgot to read the important details (color, duh!) As far as sizing, I am a 6- 6.5. I ordered a 6.5 knowing that they are pretty narrow in the toe. The toe area fits great but my heels slip quite a lot (even in thicker socks). With cheaper shoes I'd probably just deal with it, but I think these should fit perfectly.

Not sure if I'll make this style work or move on... But hope this helps!

I am really liking the idea of carrying a summery straw bag during the Fall... The juxtaposition of a wool coat and straw bag just seems unexpected and delightfully quirky to me. Must have been my Saturday jaunt to Seatlle that got me thinking about market baskets...

Have you seen the new line Chance? Created by former Kate Spade Creative Director, Julia Leach, the line is chock full of the most perfect basics. I think I will definitely need to try one of her striped tees and those sun hats are pretty irresistible as well.

Dear Readers,

As you may (or may not have) noticed, I have been slowing down the frequency of posts on Camp Comfort. With a challenging (and exciting) full-time job and summer-fun in full swing, I have found myself with less time to gather inspiration for the blog....

That being said, I have no intention of quitting the blog but posting may be pretty light for a while. So, I thank you much for your support, readership and friendship and I encourage you to sign up for the RSS feed so that you get updates as I make them.
